WW1 Imperial German Pickelhaube Thuringen
A rare ersatz felt pickelhaube to Thuringen Infantry Regiment 153.
This piece has the standard Prussian front plate of Tombac with a Fuerst scroll, overlay plate for Thuringen & correct original green state and national cockades. This ersatz example dates from the late 1914 to early '15 period & is yet another example of the variations that can be found in these felt issues. Interestingly this helmet has a rear reinforcing spine with three ventilation holes near its top . Spike & its base are firm to the helmet with all of its pins intact. The plate being of Tombac is in brass with a high copper content hence its darkened tarnishing . Tombac was in use before the war & so it is not uncommon to see still in use in the early period of WW1. Interior has its original thin leather liner albeit with some tears to rear section . Just about visible to the underside of the rear peak are the remains of an infantry regiment marking ' J.R ' followed by three numbers the last appearing to be a '3'. I have tried to make out the number however There are no extra plate mounting holes to the front of the helmet. A faint apparent size marking within circle can be seen to the underside crown along with a scribbled name also now illegible.
Rare helmet to a rare regiment.
