WW1 German Jager Zu Pferd Helmet 1915
Featured across four pages of the Feldzug 1915 book by collector the late Michael Baldwin this is one of the best examples of the rare lobster tail M15 Jager zu Pferde cavalry helmet that I am yet to encounter. As cavalry units were depleted in the early days of WW1 former cavalrymen fought in the trenches often still wearing these being before being issued the M16 steel helmet.
With markings & date to 'Otto Nachtigall 1915' this wonderful piece has had a coat of field grey paint applied by brush during its service life with the unblued helmet body showing brush marks left during its original application. These were often painted in the field to prevent rust & also for camouflage effect due to having left the factory without blueing or blackening to the body. The lambskin lining is present & machine sewn to the single thickness leather band this being a sign of earlier , rather than later, production. Leather chinstrap is totally original this a totally untouched piece from the trenches of WW1.
