WW1 US 91st Infantry Division Helmet
A WW1 US M17 steel helmet with painted insignia of the Meuse-Argonne combat Division the 91st.
After the initial 400,000 British Brodie helmets were supplied to US forces upon there entry into WW1 , production by the USA of their own US M17 helmet began which is almost identical in appearance. An excellent example it has the hand painted Fir Tree insignia to front which symbolises its traditional home of the Far West. Finished in thick granulated khaki camouflage paint it has liner system intact with leather chinstrap supple & undamaged .
This division was , in September 1918 , engaged in thier first operation the St.Mihiel Offensive in France. They then fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive where they succesfully helped to destroy the German First Guard Division smashing through three successive enemy lines. Twelve days before the end of World War I, the division, as part of the VII Corps of the French Sixth Army, helped drive the Germans east across the Escaut River in the Battle of the Lys and the Escaut. The division was awarded separate campaign streamers for its active role in the Lorraine, Meuse-Argonne and Ypres-Lys campaigns.
