Vietnam Period US Helicopter Crewmans APH-5 Helmet With Artwork
A standard APH-5 ( Aviator Protective Helmet Number 5) flight crew helmet with coloured artwork to rear.
The APH-5 was adopted prior to the Vietnam war but was still in use during the conflict allowing valuable lessons to be learnt regarding its effectiveness in a crash situation. These were found to come off the wearers head during a crash situation & had a poor earcup design so wasa replaced later on by the improved 'AFH-1' version. Complete with its retracting protective eye shields , wiring & earplugs still attached to it this helmet has had a multi armed man painted to the rear of it no doubt implying that this Helicopter crewman was juggling alot of different roles !
