WW2 British Pioneer Corps , 1st Canadian Army Battledress 1944
A totally untouched & originally badged British battledress blouse to a sergeant of the Pioneer Corps serving with the 1st Canadian Army. This force served with UK other national elements as part of the 21st Army Group this British Pioneer sergeant being one of many British personnel within it.
This battledress has to each sleeve printed 'Pioneer Corps' shoulder titles , 1st Canadian Army patches & green & red arm of service strip underneath that. Right sleeve has overseas service chevrons denoting three years overseas & with his Italy & Africa Star ribbons already up most likely indicates NW Europe service. Clothing label gives us date of 1944 with size 12 & the manufacturer of H.Edgar & Sons Ltd. The soldiers name of 'MARTIN' handwritten to interior lining. His Africa Star medal has the '8' numeral indicating service in the 8th Army.
Overall light wear with a couple of match stick head sized moth holes visible when held up to the light. A handwritten card believed to be from the original owners family describes the role & history of this Army .
As is well documented the 1st Canadian Army was raised in England in 1942 & left the UK 1943 coming under command of the Eighth Army during the invasion of Italy & Sicily. They were involved in the Normandy campaign from early July 1944 fighting at the Falaise pocket , on into Belgium , Holland & right through NW Europe. The British 1st Corps came under its command from August 1st 1944 until April 1st 1945.
