WW1 German Artillery Ersatz Felt Helmet Of Prussia
Scarce Prussian M15 enlisted mans felt helmet with balltop for Artillery troops.
These felt helmets were manufactured shortly after the outbreak of war in 1914 when leather helmet manufacturers could not keep up with the sudden multiplied demand of a massively mobilising army. This piece conforms to the M15 model of helmet with grey metal fittings, it was common for earlier brass fittings to be repainted over in grey to match the new grey fittings from 1915 onwards. The balltop ( Kugel) was specific to troops of the Artillery & in this instance is of steel which has weathered with fieldwear down to the metal now showing a very natural darkened patina overall . Coming with original national & Prussian state cockades the interior is still in good order with just a small tear to one part of the leather & some oxidisation to the underside of the spike base. There are very faint traces of markings to underside of the rear peak Chinstrap is totally original to the helmet.
