WW1 French ' Saumur ' Style Doctors Kepi - Service de Sante'
An early French kepi for an officer (Medecin-Major ) of medical troops.
This kepi is in the typical of the period 'Saumur' style with high almost vertical rear sloping forwards to a lower front. Worn as of around 1883 it was on this date that the velvet band & flat braids were given to Doctors. Many French items of uniform seen in the 1914 period originated from the 1880s until the switch over to Horizon Blue in late 1914/15 . This piece has gilt officers chinstrap buttons embossed with the 'Aesculapian' emblem of medical personnel. Interior has quality champagne silk lining with size adjusted headband . There are a a few surface moth nips in places towards the rear & a couple that have gone deeper however only noticeable upon close inspection & almost impossible to find these plushly made kepis devoid of any moth at all . Small nip to peaks right underside.
