WW2 US Aviators M3 Anti- Flak Steel Helmet .

The first of the general issue "Anti -Flak" helmets that were designed to offer protection to air crew . The shell still retains most of its special "Flock" cotton lint dust treatment , factory applied to stop the danger of the metal freezing to the skin at high altitudes and as a secondary anti static measure. The helmets liner shows very light service wear . To the front is a neatly marked set of initials ,being MDC . This may be M ? C ? C=Crew . The flock finish has attracted some rust bleed as is so common with these but is now very stable
