WW1 British Tank ( Splatter ) Mask With Remains Of Fitting Label
Probably the best 'named' example of the iconic WW1 British Tank Crew "Splatter " mask that I have ever had showing no wear & still with remains of its 'adjustment' instruction card still tied onto it with the original string. This label gave information on how to fit the tying tapes to your head correctly. The name 'POLLEY' has been written across the front of the leather facepiece lending itself to further research.
I would surmise that this mask was issued but never used. The chamois leather to the reverse is almost as good as when it came from stores and the kapok like cushioning is still full and plump . Both factory tape tie cords are present . All stitching is good and tight and importantly in the same twin needle hand applied stitch to the masks lower areas seam . The fine pig skin leather outer face is very good with a few minor age related scratches etc .Often having worn away on most examples one can still see the intact brown paint coating to its metal eye slits.
A rare example in this condition .
