WW2 British Bombay Bowler Of The Calcutta Light Horse
A rare surviving example of a British "Bombay Bowler" with insignia flash of the Calcutta Light Horse. .
These helmets were cheaper alternatives to the Wolseley helmet & were originally made in India. Distinctive with their flat tops , they were worn by British and Indian Army personnel in WW2 , particularly officers, who wore them in various colonies in Africa and the Far East. These helmets were constructed from Shola pith, a light, buoyant wood, and featured a white canvas cover and brown leather chin strap. To interior dome is a tailor label of 'Mohamed Ali Master Tailors Contractors To The Calcutta Light Horse '.
These are often crushed or damaged due to their thin , therefore more affordable , construction however this piece is quite excellent & rare surviving example.
